What to Wear for Family Photos in Orlando: A Color and Outfit Guide

Right after "when should we book?", the question I hear most is "what do we wear?" It is also the part that causes the most stress the night before a session — five people, five closets, and a group chat full of photos of shirts. The good news is that there is a simple method behind every family photo that looks effortless, and none of it requires buying a new wardrobe. This is the one I share with every family I photograph.

Start with a palette, not with outfits

Matching white shirts and jeans had their moment. Today the photos that age best are coordinated, not identical: everyone in the same family of colors, each person dressed a little differently. Pick two or three colors plus one neutral — for example cream, dusty blue and soft grey, or rust, olive and camel — and build every outfit from that list.

Let one person carry a pattern, usually a dress on mom or a little one, and keep everyone else in solids or subtle textures. One pattern adds interest; three patterns fight each other. A quick trick: lay every outfit on the bed together before the session. If one piece jumps out at you, it will jump out in the photos too.

Colors that glow in Orlando light

Most of my family sessions happen outdoors at golden hour, when the sun is low and warm. That light loves muted, earthy and soft tones: cream, sand, sage, terracotta, mustard, dusty rose, denim blue. Against the green of Florida parks and the blue of the lakes, those colors look natural and let faces stay the center of the photo.

What to avoid: neon and very saturated brights, which cast color onto skin; large logos, characters and text, which pull the eye straight to the shirt; and head-to-toe pure black, which loses its detail in the shadows. Bright white works in small doses, but a whole family in stark white tends to look flat — ivory or cream is softer and more forgiving.

The location shapes the palette, too. A lakefront at sunset favors warm neutrals and soft blues; a shaded garden makes richer tones like olive, burgundy and mustard stand out. If you have not chosen a spot yet, the best Orlando parks for golden-hour family photos and the best photo locations in Winter Garden walk through what each one looks like.

Fabrics and fit for the Florida heat

Even in the cooler months, Central Florida evenings can be warm and humid, so comfort is part of looking good. Breathable fabrics — linen, cotton, light knits, flowy dresses — keep everyone relaxed, and fabric that moves in the breeze photographs beautifully. Texture helps too: a knit, a lace detail or a waffle weave adds depth without adding color.

Make sure everything fits well when sitting, kneeling and picking up a child. Tight waistbands, stiff collars and dresses that ride up all show in the photos, mostly through the face of the person wearing them. Shoes matter more than you think: clean neutral sneakers, sandals or simple boots, or bare feet if we are on grass.

Dressing the kids (and keeping them happy)

Start with the kids, not with yourself. A child's outfit is the hardest piece to find in the right color, so choose it first and build the parents around it. Pick clothes they have already worn at least once — new shoes that pinch and scratchy tags are the fastest way to a meltdown.

Dress little ones at the last possible moment, or at the location itself, and pack a backup top, wipes, water and a snack that does not stain. Babies look sweetest in simple, soft pieces — a knit romper, a linen set, bare feet. And if a baby is joining for the first time, there is a separate guide on when to book a newborn session.

Mom, dress yourself first

Mom is usually the person who plans every outfit and gets ready last, in five minutes. Do it the other way around. You are in almost every photo, often holding a little one, so choose something you feel beautiful in: a dress with movement is the easiest option and photographs wonderfully when you sit, walk or spin. Then dress your partner to complement you — a solid shirt in one of the palette colors is usually all it takes.

If you are expecting, the same palette works with a flowing gown that shows your bump — the full guide on what to wear to a maternity session covers it. And if the session is for the holidays, fall family photos for holiday cards has seasonal color ideas and a timeline for getting the cards out on time; for festive ideas, see Christmas family photos in Orlando.

Key takeaways

  • Coordinate, don't match: two or three colors plus a neutral for the whole family.
  • One pattern at most, and solids or textures for everyone else.
  • Muted, earthy and soft tones glow at golden hour; skip neon, logos and head-to-toe black.
  • Breathable, comfortable fabrics that fit well when sitting and holding kids.
  • Choose the kids' outfits first, and let mom dress for herself before everyone else.
